Court fines Enyobeni tavern owners R5,000 each

The East London Regional Court on Friday fined the two owners of the Enyobeni tavern R5,000 or 100 days direct imprisonment.

On Wednesday, Siyakhangela and Vuyokazi Ndevu were found guilty of selling alcohol to minors. The two were charged following the deaths of 21 teens during a ‘pens down’ party in June 2022.
The court found that the owners did not take all the necessary and reasonable steps to ensure that underage persons were not allowed into the premises as per the law.
“I have been trying to balance all their interests as fairly as possible and considered the applications which have been made and the interest of the community. Each of the accused has been sentenced to a fine of R5000 or 100 days in imprisonment,” said Magistrate Kevin Von Bratt.
