Court hears Mcebo Dlamini's bail appeal
Updated | By JacarandaFM News
The state is vehemently denying that it's playing political games in the case brought against Fees Must Fall leader Mcebo Dlamini.
Advocate Dali Mpofu is representing Dlamini, who has brought an appeal against an earlier refusal to grant him bail.
Dlamini is being held at the Johannesburg Correctional Services Center, also known as Sun City, until his court appearance next week.
"You can charge a person with anything, knowing full well that the trial will never happen or he will succeed in the trial, it doesn't matter. As long as we just remove him for now. If he wins the case in two years' time, so be it," says Mpofu.
Dlamini was arrested following violent clashes on the Wits Campus last month and faces five charges including assault, damage to property and theft.
State Prosecutor Steven Ruben hit back in the Palm Ridge High Court, saying they have evidence of Dlamini's crimes.
"There is video footage of the applicant stealing riot gear of a security officer. To say that is not a serious issue and to say that is a laughable charge...I'm speechless," says Ruben.
