Court hears Ntanzi ‘traumatised’ over alleged beating by police

The defence counsel for accused one and two in the Senzo Meyiwa murder trial, Advocate Thulani Mngomezulu, told the court on Monday that his client had been left traumatised by the alleged beating that he received from a state witness.

Wendell Jonathan, who is a metro police officer in Ekurhuleni, has been accused of beating Bongani Ntanzi into confessing details of Meyiwa’s murder.

Jonathan, who has told the court that he was roped in to escort the accused in June 2020, began his testimony on Friday.

“When you ascended the box, accused number two told me that ‘when I see this man, I feel like crying because of the way he beat me. I am traumatised,” said Mngomezulu.

Evidence before the court states that Ntanzi was arrested on 16 June 2020.

He was then driven to the Moroka Police Station on 19 June for an alleged confession.

Mngomezulu has also told the court that Jonathan and two others electrocuted Ntanzi on the day in question.

“At that moment, Sergeant Mabena was putting a plastic bag on his face, and Buthelezi was blocking the accused from getting out of the car.”

But Jonathan has denied the events, saying that his primary duty was to transport the accused.

The court will continue on Tuesday.

It was adjourned early to allow the defence to peruse the itinerary of the vehicle use on 19 June.
