LISTEN: Court hears of strained relationship between Kelly, Senzo

The High Court in Pretoria on Friday heard testimony on what seemed to have been a strained relationship between songstress Kelly Khumalo and Senzo Meyiwa.

Defence counsel for accused four, Advocate Zithulele Nxumalo, detailed text messages between Kelly Khumalo sent and her sister Zandile.

The text messages were sent between 2013 and 2014 when Kelly was in a relationship with the late soccer star.

In one of the messages read by Nxumalo, Kelly tells Zandile: "I'm emotionally drained. I sometimes feel that Senzo brought a dark cloud in my life. I can almost hate myself for not succeeding in getting rid of him via sms as it would not go."

When asked what Kelly meant, Zandile told the court that she couldn’t remember or that it was related to Meyiwa’s ongoing relationship with his wife, Mandisa Mkhize.

Zandile Khumalo, the state’s first witness in the re-hearing, was present at the house in Vosloorus when Meyiwa was shot and killed.

The trial against the five men accused of the 2014 murder ended in an early adjournment on Friday.

Earlier, Zandile conceded to Advocate Charles Mnisi, who represents Mthobisi Mncube, that she cannot identify the gunman among the accused.

“There were two intruders in the house, and here we see five people. As to how that came about, that we can leave to the police as well as the evidence that was found," said Khumalo.

“No, I duly respect that, but finally, you aren’t able to see any person who had a firearm or one of the intruders who had a firearm," questioned Mnisi.

"For now, I only have suspicions. I don’t want to point out the poor person based on suspicions," added Khumalo.

The trial will continue on Monday.
