Court rules dropping of Zuma charges 'irrational'
Updated | By Suné du Toit
The High Court in Pretoria on Friday found the National Prosecuting Authority's decision to drop more than 700 corruption charges against President Jacob Zuma was irrational.
"Mr Zuma should face the charges as outlined in the indictment," said Deputy Judge President Aubrey Ledwaba.
The court had to consider if the decision in 2009, to drop 783 charges against the president, was indeed legal.
This matter was brought to court by the DA, who wanted then prosecutions boss Mokotedi Mpshe's decision to be reversed.
Judge Ledwaba had some hard words for Mpshe.
"Considering the situation in which he found himself, Mr Mpshe ignored the importance of the oath of office which demanded him to act independently and without fear and favour," he said.
DA Leader Mmusi Maimane was in court and welcomed the ruling.
