Court sentences rapist grandfather to 36 years
A man has been sentenced to 36 years in prison for the rape of his two grandchildren in the Verulam Regional Court, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Friday.
Spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said the 55-year-old grandfather was convicted and sentenced on Wednesday.
“On 1 June 2013, the victims, both aged 10, were visiting their grandfather at [the] Matholamnyama Area, Ndwedwe, [and] while they were sleeping the accused came to their room and raped them,” Zwane said.
“They informed their mother and two cases of rape were opened at Ndwedwe police station for investigation,” he said.
The KwaDukuza Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit took over the investigation and the man was arrested and charged, said Zwane.
