Court sets aside Grace Mugabe’s diplomatic immunity

The High Court in Johannesburg High Court has set aside the decision to grant Zimbabwe's former first lady Grace Mugabe diplomatic immunity.

The decision to grant her diplomatic immunity was taken by former Minister of the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (Dirco), Maite Nkoana-Mashabane, after Mugabe allegedly assaulted model Gabriella Engels in a hotel in Sandton in August 2017.

Engels suffered cuts and bruises to her head following the alleged assault by Mugabe.

The court ruled the immunity was inconsistent and ordered the former minister to pay the legal fees of all parties involved.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) who - along with Afriforum - brought the case to the court, expressed their delight at the latest ruling.

The DA’s federal executive chairperson James Selfe says they now expect the police and National Prosecution Authority (NPA) to start legal proceedings.

Selfe says this could include an extradition order, should it be necessary.
