Court suspends decision to remove Tshwane mayor

The high court in Pretoria has suspended all decisions made by Tshwane council on Thursday.
The city’s mayor Stevens Mokgalapa and council speaker Katlego Mathebe were voted out during a special sitting where a motion of no confidence was tabled in the two officials.
The Democratic Alliance (DA) subsequently lodged a court application, saying the process to remove Mokgalapa and Mathebe was illegal.

The DA’s leader in Gauteng John Moody says the vote of no confidence remains void until the application is heard by the court on December 17.
“The court has pronounced an interim relief order which means everything that transpired yesterday in the City of Tshwane, that sitting, has been set aside.
“The City of Tshwane has got an executive mayor, which is councillor Stevens Mokgalapa, who is on leave and therefore has an interim executive mayor which is councillor Abel Tau.”
The court has requested answering affidavits to be filed on December 10.
