Covid-19 deaths in SA breach the 70-thousand mark

The Covid-19 related death toll in South Africa has risen above 70 000 on Monday, after a further 243 new deaths were recorded in the latest 24-hour cycle.

The country has recorded a total of 70 018 Covid-19 related fatalities since the beginning of the pandemic.
The latest report by the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) further shows there were 5 683 new Covid-19 cases.
According to the NICD, this represents a 24.3% positivity rate, out of the 23 349 tests conducted in the last 24 hours.
Gauteng remains the province with the highest number of daily infections, with 1 559 cases recorded on Monday, followed by Western Cape with 1 192 cases.
There has been an increase of 479 hospital admissions in both private and public facilities on Monday.
On the vaccine front, 215 349 jabs were administered on Monday.
