Covid-19 infections top 2 000 for fourth consecutive day

South Africa has recorded 2 237 new coronavirus cases, according to the latest statistics released by Health Minister Zweli Mkhize on Saturday.

More than 2000 new daily cases were also recorded between Wednesday and Friday.


The cumulative number of Covid-19 cases in the country now stands at 749 283.


Mkhize has also confirmed 53 Covid-related fatalities.


The Eastern Cape, currently the hardest-hit province, has recorded 34 new coronavirus-related deaths in the latest reporting period.


There were an additional 8 deaths in the Western Cape, 6 in the Free State, and 5 in KwaZulu-Natal.


This brings the cumulative number of Covid-19-related deaths to 20 206.


The country’s recovery rate has dipped slightly to 92,5%.

The second week of the National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations saw 77 papers being written at different centres across the country. Nine candidates contracted coronavirus and had to write their exams at a different venues.
