Covid-19 in SA: More than 2 000 new cases, 40 deaths

The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) has reported 2 411 new Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours leading up to Thursday evening.

This is a slight decrease from the new cases that were reported the previous day.
Experts have warned that the country is at the turning point of the pandemic with a further decline in cases expected.
Gauteng, which has been the hardest hit during the fourth wave, also recorded a slight decline from over 1 000 new cases to 874 new cases on Thursday evening.
“The majority of new cases today are from Gauteng (36%), followed by Western Cape (20%). Kwa-Zulu Natal accounted for 18%; Mpumalanga accounted for 8% and Free State accounted for 6%. Northern Cape accounted for 5%; Eastern Cape accounted for 4%; Limpopo accounted for 3%; and North West accounted for 2% of today’s new cases,” says the NICD in a statement.
The National Department of Health continues to record a backlog of Covid-19 mortality cases due to the ongoing audit exercise.
It has reported an additional 40 Covid-19 related deaths and of these, 7 occurred in the past 24 - 48 hours.
This brings the total fatalities to 99 018.
There has been an increase of 82 hospital admissions in the past 24 hours, with 3 075 people currently admitted in both private and public health facilities.
