Covid-19 slows down the eradication of pay inequality in SA, shows report

The National Planning Commission (NPC) says the country has improved when it comes to income equality - until Covid-19 happened.
NPC Commissioner, Mariam Altman, says even though improvements have been made, the country remains among the most unequal societies in the world.
She told a webinar on Thursday morning that economic development growth in the country is also 'too slow.'
The discussions centred around the report titled, Review of Economic Progress towards the National Development Plan's (NDP) Vision for 2030.
"Growth is a result of development policies, you don't make growth directly. It is something that is an outcome of the orientation of your other policies," says Altman.
"Now, growth has just been too slow since 1960 at least, it is not a recent problem; we have behaviours that stick us in the mud."
Altman goes on to say countries like Colombia that experts never thought will progress, are now surpassing South Africa’s growth.
"The issue is that we have to break out of this norm and the critical issue again is an investment in people and investment in institutions that can deliver to people; that is the critical differentiator," says Altman.
