CPI up by 0.4 percentage point: Stats SA

The consumer price index for all urban areas rose to 5.8 percent in January, Statistics SA said on Wednesday.

"This rate was 0.4 of a percentage point higher than the corresponding annual rate of 5.4 percent in December 2013," it said in its report.
  

"On average, prices increased by 0.7 percent between December 2013 and January 2014."

 

The food and non-alcoholic beverages index increased by 1.6 percent between December and January, and the annual rate increasedto 4.3 percent in January from 3.5 percent in December.

 

Food and non-alcoholic beverages components of the index that increased included vegetables, fish, meat, cold beverages, bread, cereals, sugar, sweets, desserts, fruit, hot beverages, milk, eggs and cheese.

 

The components that decreased were oils and fats.  

 

The transport index increased by 1.2 percent between December and January.

 

"[This was] mainly due to a 38c/litre increase in the price of petrol," Stats SA said.


  

"The annual rate increased to 7.8 percent in January from 6.3 percent in December."
