CPI up slightly by 0.5% point

The consumer price index (CPI) for all urban areas rose slightly by 0.5 of a percentage point in May, Statistics SA said on Wednesday.

The CPI inflation rate was 6.6 percent for May, 0.5 of a percentage point higher than the 6.1 percent in April.
On average, prices increased by 0.2 percent between April and May.
The food and non-alcoholic beverages index increased by 0.9 percent between April and May.
The annual rate increased to 8.8 percent in May from 7.8 percent in April.
Stats SA said the transport index decreased by 0.1 percent between April and May, mainly due to a 15c/litre decrease in the price of petrol.
The annual rate increased to 8.9 percent in May from 6.8 percent in April.
