Five people were killed in a head-on collision between two cars on the N4 in Wonderfontein near Belfast on Saturday night.
Four of the victims were declared dead on the scene, while the fifth victim succumbed to his injuries in the hospital.
Moeti Mmusi, spokesperson for Community Safety, Security, and Liaison in Mpumalanga, said the cause of the crash is unknown.
"Three people sustained serious injuries. It is suspected that one of the drivers may have lost control of the vehicle and veered off the road before crashing into the vehicle that was coming from the opposite direction. The investigation is already underway.”
Acting MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison Busisiwe Shiba urged motorists to be alert on the roads.
“Obeying of the rules is a key and non-negotiable requirement for every person who drives on our roads. We must all play in making our roads safer," Shiba said.
