Minister of Environment
Barbara Creecy has hailed the contribution of the private sector in the fight
against rhino poaching.
The minister made the remarks on World Rhino Day on Thursday.
Creecy said the proportion of rhinos on private land has grown from about 30% in 2012 to 60% at present.
“The Department in cooperation with the provincial conservation authorities, SANParks, private rhino owners and the SAPS, has been focusing on a proactive and integrated approach that builds on existing initiatives and blurs the distinction made between national, provincial, and private parks whilst increasing situational awareness and sharing of information.”
Twenty-seven rhinos have also been moved to Mozambique.
“This landmark and pioneering rewilding initiative is the result of a partnership between Mozambique’s National Administration for Conservation Areas, Peace Parks Foundation and Exxaro Resources, in collaboration with the Governments of South Africa and Mozambique.
Last month, the Kruger National Park said it lost more than 350 rhinos -- about 12 percent of its total -- in less than two years.
