Crime Intelligence exists to create crime, says McBride

The head of the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) Robert McBride has told Parliament the biggest threat to national security is police corruption.

McBride appeared before the Portfolio Committee on Police on Thursday.

He made startling claims of corruption at the highest level of the South African Police Service (SAPS), describing it as the country's worst enemy.

"SAPS functions at its highest level, with one or two exceptions, as a matrix of corruption," said McBride.

McBride further slammed Crime Intelligence as highly defective, incompetent and corrupt.

"It exists to create crime, that is what you have. It means that we are unable to detect crime successfully and bring people to court, or prevent it because people are busy, preoccupied with the stealing."

Ipid is meant to investigate police misconduct but McBride said their efforts are met with bribes and victimisation.

"There have been attempts to bribe our investigators and make them make incriminating statements against us. It is part of the decision taken from senior members of SAPS."
