Criminal case opened after UKZN exam venue torched

Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande says a case of public violence has been opened following violent protests at the University of KwaZulu-Natal.
The William O’Brien examination venue at UKZN’s Pietermaritzburg campus was burned down on Tuesday morning.
Nzimande says the incident is believed to be linked to the ongoing student protests against the National Student Financial Aid scheme's new direct payment method.
He says the university is working with law enforcement agencies to ensure that those responsible for these "heinous acts" are held accountable.
“Should it be established that there are students behind these criminal acts, they must be subjected to the university's internal disciplinary processes because arson, vandalism and intimidation are counter revolutionary and will not justify any legitimate forms of protest and should be condemned unequivocally by all, including by student themselves” said Nzimande.
The university has since confirmed that classes have returned to normal.
