The charges were laid at Pretoria Central Police Station on Tuesday.

The charges relate to the EFF's disruption of a special council meeting during which the city's budget was supposed to be tabled.

Council Speaker Murunwa Makwarela says the EFF cannot continue to derail the work of council.

“It is an imperative for us as the council, and as far as the constitution is concerned, that the budget is delivered without any fail.

"So, we have just done that. On Thursday all the parties in council are going to debate the budget.

We are protecting the constitution by laying criminal charges against those that want to derail the work of council.

"But equally, we are a legit government that has been formed according to the constitution, so we will discharge our mandate without fear or favour,” says Makwarela.

The city's MMC for Corporate and Shared Services Kingsley Wakelin says he is hoping more charges will be added.

“The charges that we are laying against them at the moment is intimidation, malicious damage to property and assault charges. Hopefully we will see if there will be any additional charges.

"We have taken a very strong position on this matter, we will not allow this to continue in our present anymore. As a coalition partner, we will follow the rule of law to ensure that justice is served."
