Crocs spotted near Harties dam wall
Updated | By Jacaranda FM
There’s been news of crocodile sightings at the Hartbeespoort Dam in the North West.
On Friday, resident Koketso Kwele managed to capture an image of the 2-meter-long beast.
The tourist photographer says in all the years he has worked at the popular Hartbeespoort Dam tunnel, this was the first time he encountered a crocodile in the area.
Kwele says at first, he did not believe the water controllers working at the dam when they alerted him to the peculiar discovery.
“They were busy pointing there inside the dam, so I came with my camera and zoomed until I saw it. But we only saw the tail on Thursday. Then on Friday that’s when I saw the whole crocodile, even the head.”
Kwele says he doesn’t believe the creatures pose an immediate threat to tourists, who often stop along the dam wall to take pictures, or locals like himself who work there.
“The dangerous part I think is down at the water, and if people go there that’s when they may experience some danger, unlike those who stay at the dam [wall].”
Local publication Kormorant is reporting that three more crocodiles were spotted further down the dam, near a well-known holiday resort.
Officials from the Department of Water and Sanitation have been informed and are said to be searching for the crocodiles.
