CWU backs Hlaudi Motsoeneng

The Communications Workers Union (CWU) says the fight against the exploitation of journalists' rights should be fought across the board and not only at the SABC.

The union briefed media Tuesday afternoon where they condemned what they call an attack on the public broadcaster and Hlaudi Motsoeneng.

Rolling protest action has been planned against the SABC's ban on showing the destruction of state property during violent protests and the suspension of senior journalists.

The union believes civil society is being hypocritical and questioned their intentions.

It also branded former SABC CEO Jimi Mathews a coward for his public resignation.

According to the CWU, there is nothing wrong with the editorial policy at the SABC.

"There's no such amendments to the policy. The ANC was saying we will have a meeting where we change any editorial policy, because it just can't be changes by individuals. It has a process it must go through to change such policies," CWU President Clyde Mervin said

The union says the real issue is white monopoly capital.

"Editors, editorial and media houses owners...we apologise for disappointing you in not joining the chorus of criticising the SABC like everyone does, but in this instance we choose to stand with the principle and if that makes us unpopular, let it be," General secretary Aubrey Tshabalala said.
