The CWU says its in reaction to the public broadcaster forging ahead with retrenching 303 employees as part of its restructuring process.

Workers drove in convoys to the Union Buildings on Wednesday to hand over a memorandum to the office of President Cyril Ramaphosa, demanding that the president intervene and dissolve the SABC Board.

CWU Secretary Aubrey Tshabalala says workers will down tools until around 2pm on Friday.

“Our action continues, and we have not suspended anything, we think we are still mobilizing, intensifying, and making sure that every worker at the SABC to participate particularly in the go-slow at 11 am and right up until 2 o’clock,” says Tshabalala.

He adds that Ramaphosa has promised to meet with the minister of Communications to find a solution to the retrenchment process.

“We have received a letter from the office of the President after we have handed our memorandum indicating that he will touch base with the delegated minister so that he can be able to come back to us.

“The second point is that last night we had a discussion with the board, the minister, which is Thulas Nxesi and minister Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams and we are trying to find ways in terms of resolving the issue and the meeting is ongoing,” concludes Tshabalala.
