DA calls for Cele's head as political parties march on Women's Day
Updated | By Mmangaliso Khumalo
The DA says ineffective policing amid the country’s sky-high crime rate is a problem created by politicians and not police officials.
The party marked Women's Day in Kimberley on Tuesday by marching against gender-based violence.
Party's national spokesperson Siviwe Gwarube says police officials are not given resources that they need to keep communities safe.
"Often the police are not the problem, often the politicians are the problem, often the problem is that these men ands women are not given enough resources that they need to keep our communities safe.
"It is sad that R8 million is spent protecting one VIP politician, R8 million is spent protecting politicians instead of providing vehicles for our police stations, instead of providing more boots on the ground for our communities, it's high time that we are taken seriously."
DA MP Nazley Sherif says gender-based violence has become a speech topic.
"Right now, nothing is happening, GBV is becoming a speech topic, something people like to speak about, but this is not a speech topic, but it is our lives.
"We live this life everyday and we have to keep ourselves safe every day and we have to keep ourselves safe everyday because this government is useless and is doing nothing.
"We need change our government and we have to vote for a capable state to come in and make a difference.”
