In October last year, Parliament launched an investigation into George's salary after the media reported that then-National Assembly Speaker Nosiviwe Mapisa Nqakula and National Council of Provinces chair Amos Masondo misled the legislature over the salary hike.

According to a report by the Sunday Times, George earns over R4 million, despite the position being priced at a maximum of R2.6 million.

The DA accused the pair of clandestinely approving the 70% hike.

Mapisa-Nqakula has since resigned to focus on allegations of corruption against her.

“Our view is that Parliament must still investigate this matter,” DA chief whip Siviwe Gwarube said on Thursday.

“The secretary to Parliament still has a salary that has been inflated by 70%, and the members of Parliament are still none the wiser about how this happened, who made the decision and why it is that Parliament was misled in the first place when it comes to how much the secretary would be paid.

“The advertised salary was R2.6 million, and it would seem now the secretary to Parliament is earning almost double that. This is why the DA wants the matter to be investigated before the end of the term.”
