DA heads to court to challenge IEC reopening of candidate lists

The Democratic Alliance (DA) has vowed head to court to challenge the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) decision to reopen the candidate's registration list for the local government elections.

The African National Congress (ANC)  is one of the parties which were unable to meet the IEC deadline, even after it granted an extension of a few hours.

The IEC said several parties had requested a further extension, but they could not extend it to more than four hours.

With the new voter's registration weekend set for 18 to 19 August, the IEC will reopen the process again.

The official opposition party's federal chairperson Helen Zille has described this move as outrageous.

"I predicted this from the start that is why the ANC withdrew its appeal to the Electoral Court. They knew that the window would be open to postponing the elections, we all thought it would be for six months, but it turned out to be for five days which has enabled the ANC to resubmitted candidates after it missed the deadline," said Zille

She said the IEC had been firm with parties who failed to meet the deadline in the past,

"We are certainly planning to head to court, the IEC said it was impossible to reopen candidate nominations in their papers before the court, suddenly it becomes possible because that's what the ANC wants, we are tired of state institutions bending all the rules for the ANC but standing firm against every other party.

“That is what we mean by state capture and we will not tolerate it.”
