His political party, the Democratic Alliance, has praised Williams for the work done during his time on office.

The party’s Gauteng leader Solly Msimanga says Williams always put the needs of the city’s residents first.

“The fact that he is prepared to stand down in order to ensure stability in the metro speaks volumes of his commitment to the residents as well as the political process.”

“The DA looks forward to welcoming Randall Williams into whatever role awaits him within the DA, where his experience and skill set will be a great asset.”

Williams’ resignation will be effective from midnight on 28 February.

His role came into sharp focus towards the end of last year when the city received poor audit outcomes.

“One of my core goals as Executive Mayor has always been to ensure the stability of the multi-party coalition in Tshwane without which service deliver suffers,” Williams said in a statement.

“I do not want the political instability that has taken place in Johannesburg and Ekurhuleni to spill over into Tshwane. To keep the multi-party coalition together required continuous communication and engagement to ensure unity in our city to achieve our goals.”
