DA launches Trollip petition
Updated | By Neo Motloung
The Democratic Alliance (DA) has launched an online petition in support of Nelson Mandela Bay Metro (NMB) mayor Athol Trollip.
This comes after a move by the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) to unseat Trollip with a motion of no confidence.
The EFF is unhappy with the DA's decision not to support a motion for land expropriation without compensation in the National Assembly.
DA leader Mmusi Maimane says if the motion succeeds it would hand "the metro back to the same corrupt ANC that brought the metro to its knees".
He has called on residents of NMB to sign the petition to show their support for Trollip.
"The decision by the EFF to punish the DA and ultimately move against a DA-led mayor because of the colour of his skin is a decision we simply cannot accept," says Maimane.
Maimane adds that the EFF should be aware that even their own party voters would punish them for handing over the metro back to the ANC.
"We also encourage the public to contact EFF councillors in Nelson Mandela Bay and make it clear to them that voters reject the corrupt ANC in NMB."
The EFF has asked for a special sitting on April 6 to debate the motion against Trollip.
