DA leaders should hang their heads in shame, says Maile

Gauteng Cooperative Governance MEC Lebogang Maile believes the Democratic Alliance (DA) leaders in Tshwane “should hang their heads in shame".

Maile's comments come after a planned council sitting collapsed on Tuesday due to a failure to reach quorum.

Both the African National Congress (ANC) and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) failed to pitch for the sitting that was mean to elect a new mayor.

The DA pushed ahead with the election in spite of the provincial government’s intention to place the city under administration.

"The DA leaders should hang their heads in shame for abusing public resources by calling this impromptu council sitting intended to delegitimise the Gauteng Exco decision to place the municipality under administration,” Maile said.

"This clearly demonstrates the sad state of affairs in this strategic municipality, which is the administrative home of our democratic state.”

Premier David Makhura and Maile announced last week that the City of Tshwane would be placed under administration after invoking section 139 (1) c of the constitution.

This will allow an external administrator to take over the running of the city for at least 90 days before a new mayor is elected.

The Gauteng government will now await correspondence from the Department of Cooperative Governance and the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) in order to finalise the process over the next 14 days.
