DA to march on Luthuli House to demand solutions to power cuts
Updated | By Jacaranda FM
The DA is set to march to the ANC’s Luthuli House headquarters in Johannesburg on Wednesday.
The main opposition party’s protest comes amid continuous load shedding as Eskom battles to keep up with planned maintenance and breakdowns at various power stations around the country.
It also wants the 19% tariff hike granted to Eskom by the national energy regulator Nersa to be stopped.
The DA is accusing the ANC of destroying the country’s energy infrastructure and economy.
“The DA’s protest will specifically target Luthuli House, because this is the scene of the crime that the ANC continues to perpetrate against the people of South Africa through permanent stage 6 load shedding and the latest 18.65% electricity tariff increase,” party leader John Steenhuisen said amid questions around the DA’s choice to march on the ANC instead of Eskom.
“It is at Luthuli House where, over the past three decades, the decisions were made to ‘deploy’ the corrupt and incompetent cadres who plundered and destroyed Eskom.
“It is at Luthuli House that corrupt tenders were handed out, including for the ill-fated construction of the Medupi and Kusile power stations that have cost our country so dearly.”
Steenhuisen said the march is part of the DA’s broader campaign by the party, which has seen the party face off with the ANC in court in a bid to have the governing party’s cadre deployment policy illegal and unconstitutional.
