DA challenging Mojapelo appointment in Lady R probe ‘undermines SA's interest’

President Cyril Ramaphosa's office has reiterated its confidence in Deputy Judge President Phineas Mojapelo to spearhead the investigation into the Lady R incident.

Presidency spokesperson Vincent Magwenya on Wednesday expressed confidence in the probe.
The DA's challenging the Gauteng judge's appointment in court, labelling it as unconstitutional.
Magwenya says Ramaphosa carefully considered his decision to appoint a judge to head the panel.
"It is a politically motivated court action. The DA wants to undermine the country's national interest. Failing to appreciate the importance of resolving this matter in a manner that is credible and expeditious.
"The DA is failing to appreciate the damage this issue has caused to our economy and potentially to very important diplomatic relations, which are now repaired."
Ramaphosa said earlier this month that Russia's Lady R ship docked at Simonstown to deliver equipment ordered by procurement company Armscor for the South African National Defence Force.
The probe was announced after the US accused South Africa of secretly shipping arms to Russia amid its invasion of neighbouring Ukraine.
