The Democratic Alliance (DA) has called on the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (Nsfas) to make provision for students expected to prematurely vacate residences.

On Monday, the University of Cape Town (UCT) ordered students in their on-campus accommodations to move out of their rooms within a 72 hour period due to the outbreak of coronavirus.

This comes after a staff member at the university tested positive for COVID-19.
Several universities have also suspended their classes and graduation ceremonies as a result of coronavirus.
The DA’s Siviwe Gwarube says it is important that NSFAS allowances be paid out as soon as possible.
“It’s important that these are expedited and paid out as soon as possible so that students may be able get themselves home, if we are urging people to go home during this time and NSFAS needs to be briefed on those strategies.”
Gwarube also emphasises the importance of engaging with religious leaders in the fight to curb coronavirus.
