DA to oppose attempts to remove Tshwane City Manager

The DA in Tshwane says it will oppose any attempts to remove City Manager Johann Mettler.

This comes after the ANC in the city alleged that Mettler was appointed irregularly back in September 2022.

DA Tshwane Caucus leader and former mayor, Cilliers Brink, briefed the media on Friday.

"Whatever legal pretext the ANC coalition devises, the point is that the party would prefer one of their own deployed cadres, not an independent professional, in the job of municipal manager.

"The ANC claim he lacked the experience and qualifications to serve as municipal manager. The panel that recommended Mettler’s appointment was in compliance with these regulations."

Brink said if the appointment was irregular the MEC for Cooperative Governance would have flagged an irregularity in the appointment process in 2022.

"No such flag was raised in any report of the MEC, and no investigation was ordered by the MEC into any such matter," he added.

However, the ANC Tshwane leader, George Matjila, is adamant that Mettler was appointed irregularly by a panel that consisted of four councilors without the mayor present.

"The panel must consist of two councillors and a person who is not a councillor. The mayor must either delegate or form part of the panel.

"So in this case, there were four councillors hence we say Mettler was irregularly appointed."

"We have an interest as the ANC in ensuring that the law is followed by the latter, so that we don't have delinquents running our institutions," he told SABC News.
