DA questions authenticity of Makwarela rehabilitation documents
The DA’s leader in Gauteng Solly Msimanga says the party is in the process of verifying the authenticity of the document submitted by the Tshwane mayor to the city manager.
Mayor Murunwa Makwarela handed his insolvency rehabilitation certificate to the city on Thursday.
This saw Makwarela reinstated as the city’s first citizen following his earlier disqualification due to his financial status.
His reinstatement came after the city manager’s Johann Mettler received a notice of solvency rehabilitation from the Congress of the People councillor.
Msimanga says they have been informed that a government gazette is needed as proof of rehabilitation.
“We take note of the document that was submitted by Dr Makwarela, but having had a number of experts coming through questioning the authenticity of the document we are now at the stage where we are considering go the court and verifying if indeed this is true.
“One of the things that one of the experts informed us of is that you need to have had a government gazette that contains the name of the person that is rehabilitated. So far we haven't been able to trace any kind of documentation or any gazette that contains the name of Dr Makwarela that has been rehabilitated.”
Msimanga says the verification needs to be done to ensure stability in the city’s government.
“We want to do is to make sure that the city has a stable government in place that will be able to provide services and stabilise the finances of the municipality. That is the main concern that we have.
“We are very much concerned that we are not able to get to that at this point in time and if we can get to that, the it will be a win for the residences of Tshwane, but at the same time we cannot allow a situation where there is wrongdoing and a person who is possibly not fit to hold office.”
Tshwane’s spokesperson Selby Bokaba has meanwhile confirmd that the city manager had requested legal services to probe the issue.
“I wish to confirm that the City Manager Mr Johann Mettler has requested legal services to investigate certain aspects around the rehabilitation notice that was presented to him By Cllr Murunwa Makwarela yesterday (Thursday).
“This was done as a consequence of various issues that were brought to his attention during the course of yesterday (Thursday).”
