DA unfazed by ANC plan for motion of no confidence against Tshwane Mayor

The African National Congress (ANC) in Tshwane recently announced plans to table a Motion of No Confidence (MONC) against Tshwane Executive Mayor Cilliers Brink at the next council sitting in August.

The ANC in the region says the motion is informed by poor service delivery in Tshwane, highlighting constant water cuts and the waste collection backlog as key failures.
However, in response to the ANC’s announcement, the Democratic Alliance (DA) says the MONC has nothing to do with service delivery and everything to do with the ANC’s financial interests.
In a statement, the governing party says interventions by the DA-led coalition in the city has made significant strides in tightening financial controls in Tshwane’s supply chain management processes to curb corruption.
According to the DA, the latest such intervention involves changes to the waste collection tender, replacing 60% of the previous waste removal tenders.
“This tender has been a feeding trough for ANC-aligned businesses for years, so the DA anticipated resistance. This resistance manifested in a phone call from ANC Tshwane Regional Secretary, George Matjila, to MMC of Finance Jacqui Uys on Tuesday, 16 July,” said DA Tshwane spokesperson Kwena Moloto.
POLICE COMPLAINT AGAINST ANC’S MATJILA
On Wednesday, Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) Jacqui Uys opened a case at the Groenkloof Police Station against Matjila for contravening the Prevention of Corrupt Activities Act and the Municipal Finance Management Act.
Moloto says this was concerning Matjila’s threat of a MONC due to the Waste Collection tender changes.
“This motion of no confidence is not about service delivery but about the ANC retaliating against the DA for cutting off their income sources. George Matjila's MONC threat over the new Waste tender aligns with the mobilization of disqualified waste contractors, indicating a coordinated effort. Unfortunately, we’ve already seen violence erupt in Mamelodi and Bronkhorstspruit by contractors with similar interests to Matjila.
Matjila has denied involvement in waste collection tenders, daring Uys to prove her claims against him.
On Saturday, the City of Tshwane announced catch-up plans to address the waste collection backlog which it blames on disruptions, allegedly caused by disgruntled employees of service providers who lost out on the new tender.
