The list includes economist Mlondi Mdluli, community safety activist Ian Cameron, DA Students Organisation leader Liam Jacobs, medical doctor Karl le Roux, Mark Burke, who holds a PhD in econometrics from Cambridge, and Public Sector Built Environment Specialist Edwin Macrae Bath.

Cameron made headlines after he locked heads with police minister Bheki Cele, accusing Cele of failing to protect citizens and adequately deploying police to crime hotspots.

He says his issue with the police is not with the brave men and women in blue, but with their head.

"To the good men and women that still wear that blue uniform with pride, I want to say to them their bravery, resilience and above all their integrity has inspired me, and given me hope to take this step with the DA and to speak out even more".

DA Leader John Steenhuisen says the party's candidates are the most diverse of any political party.

"These new candidates are diverse in race, gender, and skill, and come from a variety of different backgrounds and professional careers. No other party in South Africa boasts the diversity of candidates that the DA offers South Africa. While the political left and right offer only a monochromatic and skewed representation of South Africa society, the DA comprises South Africans from every background and from all walks of life to ensure that governance is carried out with the needs of each and every citizen in mind.”

According to him, the candidates share the party’s founding principles of non-racialism, a social market economy, a capable state free of corruption and cadre deployment, and respect for the constitution and the rule of law. “Among them, we have corruption busters, subject matter experts and specialists, and a series of high-performing and accomplished mayors, members of mayoral committees, and councillors," he says.

The party's candidate Khathushelo Rasilingwane says the May 29 elections is the only opportunity to rescue South Africa.

"To all South Africans watching from all walks of life, I want to remind you that these upcoming elections is our only opportunity to ensure that we rescue this country from the trenches of corruption, we have this opportunity to ensure that we give our children something that they can be proud of one day".
