DA wants head of Gauteng Health to be suspended
Updated | By Karabo Tebele
The Democratic Alliance (DA)
in Gauteng has called for the suspension of Gauteng Health’s head of department
Professor Mkhululi Lukhele.
The DA made the call on Sunday.
It wants Premier David Makhura to suspend Lukhele after he was implicated in irregular awarding of tenders for personal protective equipment.
The DA’s spokesperson for health in Gauteng Jack Bloom says the latest reports indicate that the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) implicated Lukhele in its probe into dodgy PPE contracts in the province.
“Premier Makhura need to suspend the head of Gauteng Health Department Professor Lukhele as soon as possible. In fact, he should have done that long time ago because he is the accounting officer who has presided over the PPE contract scandal.
“The SIU has now reportedly found that he is implicated and in fact I hope the suspension goes ahead as soon as possible. This department needs new political and administrative leadership to clear up the deep rot.”
