The Democratic Alliance (DA) on Thursday welcomed a report by a task team appointed by Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga which implicated, among others, members of the South African Democratic Teachers’ Union (Sadtu) in the corrupt appointment of teachers and principals at South African schools.

“The DA welcomes Minister Motshekga’s commitment to take decisive action against SADTU-aligned officials implicated in the job-for-cash scandal,” party MP Gavin Davis said in a statement.

The findings of the report would be handed the police and prosecuting authorities to investigate whether criminal charges can be brought against those implicated.

Motshekga also undertook to meet with education MECs to ascertain whether teacher and principal posts could also be frozen.

“Today’s announcement signals that Minister Motshekga means business. She now needs to commit to very clear time frames for the release of the final report,” said Davis.

“It is important that whistle-blowers and other innocent parties are protected, but it is equally essential that the final report is released speedily so that the jobs-for-cash scandal is dealt with transparently. We must be absolutely certain that those found guilty of selling teaching posts are held to account, without fear or favour.”
