ER24 paramedics arrived on the scene at around 03.00 and found the mangled remains of two cars, said spokesperson Werner Vermaak.

The three were trapped in the car.

"On further inspection they found that an adult and two children, believed to be under the age of ten, were killed in the collision," said Vermaak.

They were extricated from the vehicle and declared dead on the scene.

"The driver, believed to be the only occupant of the other vehicle, was found hanging from the drivers door of his vehicle. He was in a critical condition."

Paramedics removed him from the car and treated him for multiple injuries. He was then transported to Leratong Hospital for further treatment.

"Although the exact circumstance of the collision is not yet known, it is understood from a bystander that one of the vehicles started drifting into oncoming traffic," said Vermaak.

Police were investigating.
