Danish tourist gang raped and robbed in New Delhi, India.

Cases of sexual violence escalate in India as a 51-year-old Danish woman was gang-raped and robbed in New Dehli, officials and reports said Wednesday.

The woman was attacked at knifepoint by eight men Tuesday evening after losing her way to her hotel in the backpacking district of Paharganj in
central Delhi.

"She said she was asking directions back to her hotel when she was accosted by the men who took her to an isolated place and assaulted her," Delhi police spokesman Rajan Bhagat said.  The attackers also robbed her of an iPad and money.

The woman, who flew back to her country on Wednesday morning, refused a medical examination, Bhagat said. Police registered a criminal complaint and detained 15 men from the area for questioning, broadcaster NDTV  reported.

The Danish embassy had also been informed. According to the Times of India newspaper, the victim had been in India for a week, travelling to the Taj Mahal city of Agra and arrived in Delhi on Tuesday.

The assault came days after a Polish woman was allegedly drugged and raped by a taxi driver while travelling with her 2-year-old daughter to New Delhi.

Sexual violence has been a focus of public attention in India since the fatal gang rape of a student on a bus in New Delhi in December 2012. Activists say little has changed in attitudes towards sexual assault, and attacks on women including foreign nationals continue unabated.
