This after the leader of the official opposition was denied access to the troubled Eskom power plant on Wednesday morning.

The Mpumalanga-based power station is one of Eskom projects that is not yet fully operational.

Steenhuisen's visit comes after a chimney-like structure at the site collapsed last month.

"On my way there this morning I was contacted by Public Entreprises Minister Pravin Gordhan, saying that I was denied access, because I have not gone through the bureaucratic hoops of his office. Upon arrival, despite that arrangements were made with Eskom personnel on site, we were met by a battalion of security guards who blocked our entrance even up the road to Kusile.

"I will get into Kusile, I will do the oversight and will report back to the voters, particularly as we have a government that has an intend of keeping South Africans in the dark."

Steenhuisen also lambasted Ramaphosa for leaving the country without electricity “while sipping tea in Buckingham Palace”.

Ramaphosa is in the United Kingdom on an official state visit.

"The president trotting down the Mall of London in a horse-drawn carriage, on his way to have tea with the King. His country is finally collapsing under the weight of three decades of ANC neglect and looting, and he’s out there trying to shine its tarnished image for the press and investors, and pose for photos at Buckingham Palace."

The DA has called on President Ramaphosa to declare a ring-fenced state of disaster around Eskom and assemble an “Energy War Cabinet” with a mix of independent energy experts.
