Date of no confidence vote moved
Updated | By Sibahle Motha
Parliament has moved the date for the vote of no confidence against President Jacob Zuma from 3 August to 8 August 2017.
Parliament spokesperson Moloto Mothapo says the decision to move the date came after consultation with political parties in Parliament and the Executive.
"There was oversight during the initial consultations, which overlooked the fact that a Cabinet Lekgotla had already been set for that week.
However, the deadline for political parties to submit their views on the preferred means of voting has not changed. It will still be on 14 July 2017", says Mothapo.
The Constitutional Court handed down judgment in an application brought by the United Democratic Movement (UDM) that Speaker Baleka Mbete has powers to decide whether or not MPs could vote by way of a secret ballot.
The UDM was joined by the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and supported by the Democratic Alliance and other civil society organisations.
The Speaker will make her decision regarding the appropriate voting procedure before the scheduled debate on 8 August 2017.
