DA ‘unlikely’ to support no-confidence motion in Ramaphosa

DA leader John Steenhuisen believes it is unlikely that the party would support a motion of no confidence against President Cyril Ramaphosa if the Phala Phala matter returns to Parliament.

The president has been accused by former spy boss Arthur Fraser of attempting to cover up the theft of thousands of US dollars from his private game farm in February 2020.

In 2023, a Section 89 Independent Panel report examined whether there was enough evidence to impeach the president and found that Ramaphosa had a case to answer in Parliament.

However, the report was not adopted by the National Assembly after the ANC voted against it.

Speaking at a media briefing on Wednesday, Steenhuisen said the Phala Pahala issue pales in comparison to the revelations made by former VBS Mutual Bank chairperson Tshifhiwa Matodzi.

In a leaked affidavit, Matodzi detailed how he met EFF leaders Julius Malema and Floyd Shivambu at a penthouse in Sandton in 2017 to discuss payments from the now-defunct bank.

Matodzi has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for the looting at VBS bank after pleading guilty to 33 counts of fraud, theft, money laundering, corruption and racketeering

"With the act of blatant corruption, state capture, there are people who will bring such a motion to try and bring the government down,” Steenhuisen countered.

“Bill Clinton famously said the biggest question is compared to what. And compared to what is sitting on the other side, in the gruesome benches of the EFF and the MK, I think that we will take our chances on the side of the president with this one rather than take it with those who would seek to bring down the government so that they can negotiate their way back to the government, just so that they can get their hands on state resources.”
