VBS scandal shows EFF doesn't care about the poor - Steenhuisen
Updated | By Mmangaliso Khumalo
DA leader John Steenhuisen has once again laid into the EFF, saying it is evident that the party’s leaders were at the epicentre of the VBS scandal.
A leaked affidavit by former VBS chairperson Tshifhiwa Matodzi detailed how the EFF and its leaders allegedly benefitted from the now-defunct mutual bank.
Daily Maverick reported that the party was allegedly paid R16 million in kickbacks, a move which Matodzi described as payments to stop the EFF from attacking the bank for granting a home loan to former president Jacob Zuma for his Nkandla home.
The publication reported that some of the money was used to buy EFF Deputy President Floyd Shivambu a restaurant in Soweto, upgrades to leader Julius Malema’s Sandton home, and a house for Shivambu’s parents.
The EFF has previously denied benefitting from the collapse of the Limpopo-based mutual bank.
Speaking on Wednesday, Steenhuisen said EFF has shown that it had “no intention of being the vanguard of the poor”.
"The money was spent on LVs, luxuries items, splurges at the Durban July and champagne and other luxury goods. And it shows very clearly that the EFF have no intention of being the vanguard of the poor. This is a mask that they use in order to justify the activities that they get up to.”
