Updated | By JacaNews
South African runner David Gatebe won the 2016 Comrades Ultra Marathon.
Gatebe finished in five hours, 18 minutes and 19 seconds, breaking the existing record of five hours, 19 minutes and 49 seconds.
In 2013, he won the Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon.
South African Charne Bosman won the women's Comrades Marathon in a time of 6 hours 25 minutes and 55 seconds in the 89km ultra-race from Pietermaritzburg to Durban on Sunday.
Bosman beat defending champion Caroline Wöstman 6:30:44.
Wöstman looked set to clench a second consecutive win, but battled cramp, injury and even a collision with a race motorbike in the latter stages of the event.
The 40-year-old Bosman had never won an ultra-race before.
