The City of Johannesburg has described the departure of David Tembe as metro police chief as a "mutual separation agreement".
Tembe, who led the metro police since 2018 and was appointed by former mayor Herman Mashaba, vacated his office on Tuesday.
He has been locked in a battle with the city since early 2019.
"Yes, I can confirm that the city has through a mutual separation agreement released Mr David Tembe as chief of police in the City of Johannesburg,” says spokesperson Nthatisi Modingoane.
"He vacated the position on 7 April. Both parties have agreed to keep the confidential the terms of separation.”
Tembe will be succeeded by Sipho Dlephu, whom the city says has years of experience in the metro police.
"He is a veteran in the municipal policing services and has experience of 36 years. We are confident that we will see stability in the JMPD," adds Modingoane.
