Public Works and Infrastructure Minister Patricia de Lille has vowed to heed a recommendation by the Public Service Commission and tackle numerous irregular appointments in her department.
De Lille was briefing the media in Cape Town on Wednesday ahead of the debate on her department’s budget in Parliament.
According to the first phase of the investigation, 11 out of the 37 senior management staff members were irregularly appointed.
The commission recommended that the appointments be set aside.
According to de Lille, the commission is investigating at least 677 people who may have been irregularly appointed.
The investigation is now in its third phase.
De Lille, whose appointment to cabinet by President Cyril Ramaphosa came as a surprise, said she will also deal with fraud and corruption through the implementation of lifestyle audits.
"In terms of dealing with corruption and fraud, we have agreed to start with lifestyle audits between August 2019 and June 2020.”
