De Ruyter to leave Eskom after March 2023
Eskom says chief executive officer André de Ruyter will only leave the power utility by the end of March 2023, following his resignation on Wednesday.
De Ruyter's resignation comes as the county continues to battle continuous power cuts, moving through varying stages of load shedding.
His departure also follows mounting criticism from cabinet ministers and other sectors of society over Eskom's inability to keep the lights on.
Last week, Energy Minister Gwede Mantashe launched a scathing attack on the power utility's leadership, saying: "Eskom, by not attending to load shedding, is actively agitating for the overthrow of the state."
On Sunday, President Cyril Ramaphosa met with the energy cluster to discuss the power crisis.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Eskom said he has agreed to stay for an additional period beyond the stipulated 30-day notice to ensure continuity.
Eskom Board Chairperson, Mpho Makwana says his last day at Eskom will be 31 March 2023.
The board also confirmed that there is no plan for the Chairman to become an interim CEO.
Makwana thanked De Ruyter for his "extraordinary service" to the people of South Africa.
Meanwhile, Public Enterprises Minister, Pravin Gordhan said André has carried "an enormous burden on behalf of South Africa"
"I want to thank him for his sacrifice and resilience in a difficult job," says Gordhan.
