This was revealed by Gauteng police commissioner Elias Mawela on Thursday, who briefed the media together with Premier David Makhura and Ekurhuleni Mayor Mzwandile Masina.

Mawela said the figure includes the bodies of two people who were found burned in Alexandra.

Although the violence in the Johannesburg CBD has been quelled, it has since spread to Ekurhuleni.

Masina said Katlehong remains volatile although police have been deployed in their numbers.

"I will be returning to Katlehong, becuase the issue that is emerging there is that there is a group of people who say they are targeting certain nationalities, which presents a major problem. We have to go and engage with them and say that South Africa belongs to all who live in it.”
