The death toll in Wednesday morning's crash near Ulundi in northern KwaZulu-Natal has climbed to 16.
A minibus taxi and a truck were involved in a head-on collision on the R66 between Ulundi and Melmoth.
The taxi burst into flames.
Initially 13 people, including a pregnant woman, were reported to have been killed.
KwaZulu-Natal Transport MEC Bheki Ntuli visited the crash site.
Ntuli said it's since been confirmed that the death toll has climbed.
"When I got over here, I was told - the driver of the truck lost control and he had two more people in the truck and he died on the spot and those two were taken to hospital.
"But in the minibus that was coming from Nongoma collided with the truck and unfortunately in that one 15 people died."
