Police in the Western Cape confirmed on Tuesday that the number of fatalities in the Van Rhyns Pass bus crash has increased to 10.
They were killed when a bus carrying 42 passengers, including farm workers, plunged off the remote mountain pass on Monday.
The accident comes after a bloody weekend on South Africa's roads, with more than two dozen people killed in several traffic accidents.
It is alleged that the bus driver lost control after he collided with the side of the mountain slope.
“Police members and emergency personnel were dispatched to the crime scene, where they were actively involved in the rescue operation,” said police spokesperson Joseph Swartbooi.
“We can confirm that 29 victims were transported to nearby hospitals for medical treatment. Ten victims were declared deceased on the scene by the medical personnel.”
